History is a Mystery

I will never understand the dynamics behind history. I understand why we have to learn it. I can comprehend that 100% but what I do not understand is who gets to choose the subject matter? Why do they choose that subject matter? Obviously they want to make themselves look good. And while this may seem simple, it really isn't when it comes to history because literally everyone, from every different culture, was an ass at one point in their assistance. So basically people try to extreme sugarcoat everything. And I just do not understand. If we are suppose to learn from our mistakes, why are we allowing things to be left out and altered? This just assures that history is doomed to repeat itself as we can not control our own ego long enough to truly educate those around us.

  1. This is extremely deep Emily and I am feeling it. However I think we need to learn history in order to understand what is going on in our own modern lives and use this knowledge to benefit our own decisions. Thought I would add some depth to your depth. Boom!

  4. I think you asked some great questions in this post. I remember in CWI last year we completed an activity that showed how textbooks from different countries portrayed the Nanking massacre differently. This event was during the Japanese invasion of Japan in the late 1930's, where Japanese soldiers killed over 300,000 Chinese. In the Chinese textbooks, the massacre was described as ruthless Japanese soldiers killing all mean and raping any women they could find, then killing them or leaving them to die in a ditch. The Japanese textbook simply said it was an advancement in a war, and deny many of the Chinese accusations. It is very important to see history from as many perspectives as possible, and get all sides to history.
