Documentary Segments

We created a document that was titled 19th Century Short Documentary Segments. We watched 3 segments about things that occurred during the 19th century.

I took notes on all 3 of them but I will only show one of them just to give a sense of how the 19th century was. Here is only one part of my notes:

BIG BUSINESS:

  • TRUST → MONOPOLY
  • 1% of the companies in American controlled ⅓ of production - 1990
  • 11 million had an average income of 400 to 600 dollars - 1890
  • The richest enjoyed 1% off the rest of the 99%
  • A middle class was emerging - doctors, lawyers, etc.
  • Achieved a new sense of themselves as a GROUP
  • Gained support from language, history, etc.
  • Rich people SHOWED OFF
  • Rockefeller and Carnegie held themselves up (RICH)
  • Work hard and you will become SUCCESSFUL but not all the time
  • Advanced economically (LOTS of people)
  • You have to sacrifice little things too achieve BIG things (little things have to get squashed)
  • “God has intended the great to be great and the little to be little”
  • You’re poor → because you SUCK
  • Reason to believe if you worked hard you would get a better education

  1. It really seems like you understood the point of the documentary. What do you think of this? what is your opinion? How would you react if something like this were to happen today?
