God in America #4
In the later 1800's and early 1900's, the old ideas, beliefs, and practices of many religions were challenged by their followers. As consequence of new scientific discoveries, ideas set forth in the bible were found to be incorrect. Also, investigation into the biblical works found that there were errors in the bible itself. These notions set forth the idea that the old practices were wrong and that the faiths must be reformed to evolve with the changing world. This conflict of the religiously fundamentalist, who took the biblical scripts literally and believed god and the bible were completely correct, vs. the religiously liberal, who believed there were errors in the scriptures and the religion must be reformed to make sense, brought attention to the idea of whether or not laws should be made that are influenced by old religious principles, as seen in the Scopes vs. Tennessee case. This case was a major victory to the modernists and to democracy because although Scopes was found guilty, it showed the absurdity of following old practices and staying stubborn to the fundamentals of the bible which inhibited the ability of religious practices to interfere with American laws and interfere with democracy. This can be seen by the fact that, according to the documentary, by the late 1800's, 90% of synagogues had adopted the new reforms to their religion. This conflict also brought up the argument of whether or not someone could be religious and believe in science, since it appeared that the ideas in religion and scientific discoveries contradicted each other. This argument is still controversial to this day.

Im glad to see that someone else has posted a God in America post cause I wanted to see what other people though about the documentary. I agree with most everything you say. I am curious as to how you feel about this being a step towards democracy. What do you think about the correlation between religion and democracy from this documentary?
ReplyDeleteReligion truly played a major role in the developing 20th century. At least that's the idea I got out of reading your post. Every detail you said was supported by a factual piece of evidence which makes your claim very convincing. May I add that where you got the 90% of synagogues statistic?
ReplyDeleteI really like how you included that this can is still a topic of discussion. It reminds me of our simulation, in which we discussed intelligent design. While listening to that trial I was able to really get a new perspective on different views, which in turn helped me with this idea that you are talking about. If you need more perspectives I would definitely refer back to the simmulation because it helped me out.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you posted thing in general since it helps people like me who found it difficult to watch the video for certain reasons. Besides finding out that the video was taken down from youtube this could save students the trouble of finding it.
ReplyDeleteI, like many others, did not complete the God in America #4 assignment. This was very helpful to understanding what I did not listen to in the video. The video was also taken down from youtube so even if I had the time to complete the assignment, I would not have been able to.
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job of having a detailed and lengthy summary. I am interested on your opinion about Scopes trial, and the reforming, which would be interesting to read at the end of your paragraph.
