Music of the 80's

Besides the political and economic change in the 1980's, there was a movement in music as well. The 60's and 70's was heavy rock and disco. The music of the 80's is know New Wave. New Wave featured a more synthesized voice. Famous bands range from Duran Duran, Boy George, The Police, and The Cure. Many of these bounds were British bands. Along with New Wave musical movement, the 80's saw the birth of hip- hop which built off of computerized beats. These artists included Run D.M.C, N.W.A, Public Enemy, and LL Cool J as well as many more. Another thing that aided the music movement was a cable tv network called MTV. With the increase in cable boxes in homes across America almost all of the youth was tuning in to MTV. MTV played music videos for hours that were more popular than the radio as they brought the music to life with animation and videography. MTV brought huge success to artists like Michael Jackson, Prince, and Madonna. Another musical aspect that grew in the 80's was punk rock featuring bands such as Black Flag, Dead Kennedy's, and The Clash.

  1. It's important to not always focus on the politics and economics throughout history but also on the social aspects at the time. The 80s were a huge outbreak for the music industry and music in general. I thought the fact about most of the bands emerging were British, was interesting.

  2. I really like this because you drift away from the classic post, the political overview of the decade! Pop culture is a part of our life as well and I think we can connect to it a little more than the economical status of the US in the 80's! Great topic! it's also well written!

  3. Do you think that this increase in different genres of music was able to aid the american public, especially targeting the youth, to overcome some of the issues they were facing at the time? We often, especially in today's society, see music as a way to escape from our own problems and just be distracted by the reliability and magic of the carefully sought out lyrics, I know that I sure as hell do! The creation of MTV, to me at least, seems to be the beacon of light that was able to unite the youth through something other than the usual havoc that was constantly demanding there attention.
