Reagan being a conservative, valued smaller governments and cut a lot of social programs, such as spending on mental hospitals which many people look back on now as a mistake. The people cut these mental hospitals often ended up homeless. Despite his errors Reagan was widely hailed as a strong opponent to Communism and some people credit him for paving the way to the collapse of the Soviet Union in the Early 90's.
Present day conservatives worship Reagan in a sense in that they feel he was a great leader who reestablished pride in being an American.
I like the outline of Ronald Reagan's approach in popularity and winning the presidential election you have mentioned. You put some important detail about Reagan's involvement paving the collapse of the USSR and changing government systems to become less involved to present day. You should probably mention what conservatives worship or honor Reagan's leadership, like maybe some of the republican candidates running for president that are or look up to conservatism.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the input Cristian. You make a good point in that I should talk about conservatism more. I think a lot of our decades republican's look up and try to mimic the conservatism of Reagan. Although it may seem like a long shot I think Donald Trump is inspired by Reagan in his own very extreme and sometimes questionable way. The idea of, "Making America Great Again" that Trump preaches is similar to that Of Reagan's in a more extreme sense.
ReplyDeleteI really like the way you stayed very objective in your writing, it definitely helps to state the facts, however I do think it would be interesting to hear about your personal opinions on his policies. Did you agree with his decisions to cut all those programs? Or should you chose to look past those minor details to accept him for the greater deeds he did and receive him as a success for the American people? I suppose it all depends on what your morals about progress and if it is okay to step on others or sacrifice them in order to help the majority.
